Djiyagan Dhanbaan

Who we are

Djiyagan Dhanbaan is a vibrant, grassroots movement of Aboriginal women on Birpai Country, Port Macquarie. In Gathang, “Djiyagan Dhanbaan” means “Strong Sister,” reflecting our mission to empower women through cultural revival, leadership, and community connection.

Founded in 2013, Djiyagan Dhanbaan brings together Aboriginal women and girls to strengthen identity, wellbeing, and leadership through cultural practice. We believe that to support others, a woman must first be strong within herself. Our work is rooted in the revival of Gathang language and traditions, fostering intergenerational healing and pride

What We Do

  • Language & Cultural Revival
We teach and share Gathang through song, storytelling, weaving, and dance. Our Ngarrgan Mirriiyn (Morning Star) choir performs original songs in Gathang, helping to keep the language alive.

  • Women's Empowerment
We create safe spaces for women of all ages to connect, share, and grow. Our gatherings include cultural workshops, healing circles, and leadership development.

  • Community Collaboration
We partner with local schools, health services, and cultural organisations to promote wellbeing and cultural education.

Nyiirun Djiyagan Wakulda Women’s Festival

Our main event, the Nyiirun Djiyagan Wakulda Women’s Festival, is a celebration of culture, connection, and sisterhood. Held annually at the Birpai Local Aboriginal Land Council, the festival brings together Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal women from across the Mid North Coast.

Festival highlights include:

  • Cultural workshops in weaving, dance, and language
  • Healing circles and wellness activities
  • Storytelling sessions with Elders
  • Performances by local artists and choirs
  • Information stalls from community service providers
  • A nourishing, wholesome, connective day to come together and connect with other women

The festival nurtures relationships, encourages leadership, and provides a culturally safe space for women to share and learn

We acknowledge that Djiyagan Dhanbaan gathers on Birrbay Barray Birpai Country, where the lands, waters, skies, and all living beings hold deep ancestral connections. We pay our respects to Elders past and present, and honour the strong spirit of the women who have walked, sung, and cared for this place since time began. Wanyimbu Wanyimbu ganyila Wanyimbu Wanyimbu ganyiy. Always was, always will be.
